Heidi Tumbarello

Being a Jazzercise Instructor allows me to combine my passion for the human body, wellness, music, dance and motion and share this passion with others to hopefully impact positively on their lives. It helps me be a better person.

I started jazzercising in ? 1995? I fell in love with the format of Jazzercise. It is never repetitive... fresh music, new routines, fun moves... you never get bored. I have always loved to workout and dance; Jazzercise combines the two perfectly. I really like the fact that the music is choreographed by true dancers who understand music and dance. I get cranky if I can't get to class for a few days and my family will say "why don't you go to Jazzercise class tonight".

I was 42, living in Denver when I was introduced to Jazzercise in 1984. I cross country skied, hiked, and white water rafted on weekends, but I never liked exercising regularly in a gym. Jazzercise was different; it seemed like dancing with the extra benefit that I met other women that weren’t connected to my work. At first I went once or twice a week, wearing stirrup pants and bulky legging socks. We took off our shoes for the floor exercises and had TWO cool down stretching routines. Those were the days.

In 1986 I remarried and moved to northern California. I immediately found a Jazzercise class where I was exposed to the “California gung-ho leader”. I won a trip with that leader and 14 others to a quarterly taping in Carlsbad. I didn’t know all the exercise terms, so on the tape I was always a beat or two behind. My head bobbed up when all the others were down and visa versa. But, I was hooked! I began going three times a week, because if we came to class on Friday afternoon we got a Popsicle. I don’t know why that Popsicle was so important, but I had to go to get it. I started earning T shirts for attendance and finally received a shirt for “100 classes”.

In the 90’s we moved a lot (Lubbock, TX, Omaha, NE, and El Paso, TX.) but always I found Jazzercise. I wanted to have everything associated with exercising so, I bought my own hand and leg weights, mat, tubes, and step. One could attend any classes in the area on your monthly pass, so I got to know all the area instructors. I went to several tapings and Jazzerjams. At one of the events, there was a big group with Judi outside and the dirt rose as we jumped and almost choked us. At another time we had a large class on the second floor of a hotel and when the floor moved back and forth a good foot, the engineers stopped us from doing high impact. Try to stop all those instructors from going all out.

When I lived in Omaha, Judi taught a couple classes while she was visiting her ill father in Iowa. That was exciting to see her close up. She is so gracious and will sign anything, so I have shoes, pictures and a mat signed by her over the years.

I am now passionate about Jazzercise and attend classes when I can – sometimes that is three times a week; sometimes it is five. I am so regular that if I haven’t attended class for a few days, the leaders know that I am out of town but will return without prompting. The Geist Jazzercise Center compares with the “gung-ho California” ones. Heidi sets a standard of excellence that is followed by the other leaders. There is a type of class for everyone with a schedule that anyone can adapt to attend.

Even after 21 years, I love Jazzercise and continue to feel that I am only dancing.
